Marlowe’s Revenge

Back in 2010 Dan Stuart‘s brain broke and he fled to Mexico as so many others (Bierce, Lawrence, Lowry, Burroughs, Kerouac, Bolaño etc.) had before him. He settled in Oaxaca and wrote an album and false memoir that shared the same title: The Deliverance of Marlowe Billings (Cadiz Music). Both were explorations of the events that had led to his unraveling, his early days leading the erratically magnificent Green on Red and his later years as a kept man and occasional screenwriter who wandered the streets of NYC and Barcelona looking for opium dens that no longer existed and whores that always will. The world took notice and he was back in the game but somehow all the rules had changed. Shunning the ghetto of Americana, Stuart wanted retribution, songs that still had a taste of danger and intrigue, what use to be called rock ‘n’ roll. Recording alone in a concrete bunker in Oaxaca, with only the help of a banda engineer keeping time with a 30 peso little black egg shaker, Marlowe’s Revenge was born. Later, in a mescal and weed haze and looking for co-conspirators, he came across a Twin Tones video online and sent them a kite. They were half Stuart’s age but oddly they had some mutual friends and knew more than a little about his previous work. Stuart was invited to their gritty home studio in northern Mexico City and the first night they cut Soy Un Hombre and soon had a half dozen more. Curious what would happen, Stuart sent Twin Tone’s leader Gabriel Lopez some of the Oaxaca solo stuff with instructions to overdub to their heart’s content. The result is an olla podrida (foul stew) of tracks both live and collage where most of the rules of recording were broken (more shaker!) and only someone like JD Foster could mix. Digging the scene and his new friends, Stuart packed up and moved to Mexico City where he is currently holed up finishing his 2nd novel while awaiting the early 2016 release of Marlowe’s Revenge on Cadiz Music in UK/Europe and Fluff & Gravy Records in the Americas. Live shows, both solo and with Twin Tones, are also in the works for 2016.

A few words about DAN STUART:

Dan Stuart is a songwriter, author and habitual expat currently residing in Mexico City. He was a founding member of LA legend’s Green on Red featuring Chuck Prophet, as well as Danny & Dusty with Steve Wynn in the 80’s before leaving the music business in 1995 for a decade and a half. His critically acclaimed comeback record in 2012 has the same title as his 2014 false memoir: The Deliverance of Marlowe Billings, both available through Cadiz Music, London. His latest record, Marlowe’s Revenge, recorded with Mexico City’s Twin Tones will be released in early 2016 with his 2nd novel later in the year.

A few words about TWIN TONES:

Out of the gritty expanse of Mexico City comes a band that provides the soundtrack to the 20 million chilangos who buzz like bees through each working day. Twin Tones have a flashing switchblade instrumental style that mixes the compositions of Morricone’s Spaghetti classics with a Shadows-like virtuosity, yet enriched with a Mexican sensuality. Recently, they have added vocals to this heady brew determined to keep nostalgia at bay and creating a new vocabulary that speaks to a post-border world where everything is for sale but nothing can be bought without a potentially fatal price. Their songs travel from DF’s endless barrios north to Mexico’s desert frontier and across the borderline to the great promise made but seldom kept…this is music to drive by, to fuck to, to fight for. After several vinyl and digital releases on their own T-Vox label, two performances at Pete Buck’s Todos Santos Festival, an intense display at the Vive Latino Festival, European tours, studio recording with Danny Amis (Los Straitjackets) and Dan Stuart (Green on Red) as well as backing Steve Wynn and Chuck Prophet live and enjoying glowing press and a rabid Mexican following, Twin Tones are ready to spread their wings and claim their right as Mexico’s great rock band.

Praise for Marlowe’s Revenge

This “wonderfully sleazy chunk of dirty, dangerous rock ’n’ roll gets Stuart firmly back in the game” – Q Magazine

“8/10” – Uncut

“4/4 stars –  a broken, heady collage of cracked reflection and ramshackle cabin confessions” –  Record Collector

“Dan Stuart is gonna die soon, like in 20 or 30 years, a blink of an eye. And just like any good vintage fender amp, before its tubes go out for good, they glare brighter than ever and its sound plays with your mind. Has it always sounded this good? Why does it sound better than ever? No clue… just don’t fucking touch those tubes!” – Howe Gelb

“Dan has always been a force of nature, and I’m glad he kept it together enough to hang around and make this dangerous sounding record. Dan and I once ran around causing trouble and getting rewarded for it. A few nice things came our way. And those nice things? Well, we were more than happy to take a sledgehammer to them. It’s like I tell people, mark my words: Dan Stuart will end up in jail or an institution or living above a discotheque in Mexico City still writing real songs and shaking his fist at the world.” – Chuck Prophet

“Wonderfully disturbing at times. I dig this record!” – Danny Amis

“From the time I heard the VERY first Green On Red record (the one BEFORE the one I released on my label) in 1981 to, well, to the time I heard his brilliant new album with Twin Tones, I have been nothing short of a fanatic of Dan’s talent, fearlessness, tightrope approach to performing, soulfulness and depth of intellect and streetwise savvy. Yeah, he’s Danny and I’m Dusty but more than that, he’s a longtime good pal who always has his best song and best work just around the next corner.” – Steve Wynn

“Songwriter Dan Stuart has been at it for more than three decades, but his upcoming album, Marlowe’s Revenge, shows he’s still in full possession of his verve, ranking among his finest albums with Green on Red, the band he founded in the early ’80s, which brilliantly straddled the lines between desert rock, alt-country, and indie rock.” – Phoenix New Times

Praise for Dan Stuart / Green On Red

“Green on Red has been one of America’s best bands for several years now” – New York Times

“In 80’s LA combo Green on Red, Dan Stuart married up ramshackle, soul-infused Southern Rock with Southern Gothic literature – a formula way to gritty and clever for his era, and consequently he dipped out of earshot for much of the last two decades… A brilliant writer, Stuart also brings to the table penetrating language, fragile yet effortless tunes, and lashings of black humour.” – Q Magazine
